Brief Introduction of SHSE's Biodiesel Project
(R&D CENTER)
 General Introduction  
 

  In 2004, Shanghai Sunrise Enterprise (SHSE) began to found the business unit of energy chemical, focusing on preparation technology of solid catalyst, preparation technological research and development of biodiesel. Now, We have applied a number of state patents in the area of catalysts and biodiesel production, established a pilot plant for solid base catalyzed reaction and biodiesel productionwhich has the capacity to produce high conversion rate of solid catalyst and high-quality biodiesel product complied with the standards of EU and ASTM. Meanwhile, we have developed the performance evaluation testing methods for raw oil and biodiesel.

 Product and Technology  
 
  We are committed to develop advanced biodiesel preparation technology —— the technology of solid alkali catalyst, provide high-quality biodiesel and catalyst. The technology is high-tech conversion result of SHSE. In additionWe use strict control way and precise testing equipment to monitor the manufacturing process in order to ensure stability of production quality.
 Technical Superiority  
 

  Now, the majority of biodiesel production technology usually uses liquid acidic and alkaline catalyst, However, the defects of liquid catalytic technology are very obvious (see table). In recent years, with the strengthening of environmental awareness and the development of green chemistry, there is a growing emphasis on environmentally friendly catalyst in the development of new technologyso solid catalyst increasingly becomes widespread application.

        The biodiesel production technology of solid catalyst overcomes the liquid catalyst’s defects, and has some superior performances (see table).

1Liquid catalyst such as sodium hydroxide has strong corrosive effect.

2Catalyst and reaction are in the same phase, so the separation process is very troublesome. Difficult to achieve continuous production, and the cost of production is higher.

3The alkali catalyst which remained in the  products need pickling and washing, the process emits large quantity of sewagethe pollution is very serious.

4: To maintain liquid phase reaction, the reaction

     temperature cannot be very high.

5: When one of the reactions is gas, it requires pressurize step to guarantee the conversion rate, which will increase the investment for equipment.

1Recyclable, environmentally friendly, non-corrosive, avoiding the use of polar solvent or phase transfer agent.

2 High selectivityhigh catalytic activity, mild reaction conditions, easy to separate products.

3Make the reaction process continuously, improve the productivity of equipment,  the "three wastes" emissions are reduced significantly.

4The reaction can happen in the high-

     temperature or gas phase condition :

5With space and shape-selective channels effect, the selective of catalytic reaction is enhanced, and it can be adapted to various raw oils etc.

 

 

 Economic Benefits  
 

1: The biodiesel production technology of solid alkali catalyst reduces "three wastes” emissions significantly, thus reduce the damage to the environment and the cost of treatment of the pollutants.

2:The solid catalyst can be reused for at least four times, but the liquid catalyst can only be used for one time. It can reduce the cost of biodiesel production.

3: Solid catalyst production process only needs one step transesterification reaction, so it can shorten the process. In addition, the use of solid catalysts enables reaction process continuous and improves the productivity of the equipment.

4: The technology improves the conversion rate of raw oil. Due to the existence of by-reaction and difficulty for separating the production, the conversion rate of raw oil to biodiesel with liquid catalyst is lower than that with solid catalyst.

 Social Benefits  

   

The development of biodiesel industry is not only good value for economic benefits, but more significant social benefits.

1Easing the energy crisis. China is a major importer of energy consumption, but its oil reserve is limited. With economic development, the demand for energy is growing rapidly. Large quantities of imported oil threat china’s energy security. If we use plant and animal oils as the raw material, the most prominent advantage of biodiesel is its renewability. Using biodiesel as an alternative energy, China can effectively ease the energy crisis.

2As a green fuel, using biodiesel can significantly reduce pollution and protect the environment. Using solid catalyst technology can reduce the “three wastes” emissions significantly.

3The development of biodiesel industry can promote rural economic and social development. The oil plant turned into biodiesel can adjust agricultural structure and increase the income of peasants. Using the waste oil of restaurant industry or industrial to produce biodiesel, it will not only turn waste into treasure, but also will reduce emissions of waste oil in water and soil.
